Charles “Chuck” Franklin Rodell, an enthusiastic educator and family man who loved sports, passed away at the age of 83 on October 27, 2026.

Chuck left behind a legacy of curiosity, warmth, and dedication that touched the lives of countless people.

Born on August 1, 1942, in La Crosse, Wisconsin, Chuck was the son of Roland and Katherine Rodell.

He grew up alongside his sister Jean and his brother, whom the family called Rodell.

From a young age, Chuck showed a sharp mind and a love for learning.

He graduated with honors from Logan High School in La Crosse.

He then attended the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse, where he earned a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics.

It was during his undergraduate years that he met Suzanne Rye, the love of his life. The two shared a classroom and soon built a relationship that would last 58 years.

Chuck’s academic journey continued at the University of Minnesota. There, under the guidance of his advisor and mentor David Merrell, he developed a deep passion for genetics.

He earned his Doctorate in Biology, specializing in the field that would define his career. His time in graduate school sparked a lifelong commitment to research and teaching.

After completing his post-doctorate work, Chuck moved his young family across the Midwest. They lived in South Dakota, Colorado, and Tennessee before returning to Minnesota.

He taught at Vanderbilt University for a time. Eventually, he returned to his home state to become a professor of genetics at the College of St. Benedict and St. John’s University.

For 32 years, Chuck inspired students with his knowledge and enthusiasm. He made complex ideas accessible and encouraged young minds to explore the wonders of science.

Beyond the Classroom, Chuck was a Loving Husband and Father

He and Suzanne raised two children: a daughter named Anna and a son named Nathan.

The family later grew to include grandchildren Emily and August, who brought Chuck immense joy.

He cherished simple moments, cheering at sports games, sharing stories, and connecting with people. Friends and colleagues remember him for his genuine kindness and easy smile.

Chuck was preceded in death by his parents, Roland and Katherine Rodell, and his sister Jean.

He is survived by his wife, Suzanne; his children, Anna and Nathan; his grandchildren, Emily and August; and his brother, Rodell.

His family describes him as someone who reveled in human connection and always put others first.

In honor of Chuck’s lifelong dedication to education, the Rodell family has established a scholarship fund.

It supports students pursuing degrees in science at the College of St. Benedict and St. John’s University.

His influence will continue through the students he taught, the family he loved, and the kindness he showed every day.
