Former Athlete And Tennis Player Alan David Weinberger Dies At 79, Leaves Behind Wife Of 46 Years, Lauren

Alan David Weinberger, a pioneering legal mind, respected entrepreneur, and lifelong tennis player, passed away peacefully at the age of 79 on Sunday, June 29, 2026, at his home in Bethesda, Maryland.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 46 years, Lauren Weinberger, and their two sons, Mark Henry and Benjamin Charles Weinberger, who were the pride and joy of his life.

Alan David Weinberger Was A Great College Athlete

Born in Washington, D.C. in 1945 and raised in Great Neck, New York, Alan was a standout student and athlete.

He attended New York University, where he captained the tennis team, a role that foreshadowed his lifelong devotion to the sport.

He went on to earn his J.D. from NYU Law School and an L.L.M. from Harvard, forging a legal foundation that would carry him into a life of purpose and innovation.

In 1973, Alan became a founding professor of Vermont Law School, inspiring young legal minds with his intellect and passion.

A few years later, he transitioned into private practice in New York City and Washington, D.C., where his influence extended beyond the courtroom and into the boardroom.

In 1984, Alan founded The ASCII Group, a visionary network of over 1,200 small IT businesses across the U.S. and Canada, where he served as Chairman and CEO.

Through ASCII, Alan became a champion of the independent IT provider, building an influential ecosystem of entrepreneurs, innovators, and changemakers.

Tennis Was His Lifelong Love

While Alan’s professional résumé was filled with accolades and achievements, tennis held a special place in his heart.

From NYU’s courts to pick-up matches around the world, even Wimbledon, Alan used the sport not only as a form of recreation but also as a social bridge and spiritual recharge.

He also excelled in ping-pong and baseball and even served as a teen meteorologist, showcasing his wide range of talents and intellectual pursuits.

A memorial service will be held at Adas Israel Congregation on Wednesday, July 2, 2026, at 11:30 AM, with interment to follow at Judean Memorial Gardens in Olney, MD, at 2:00 PM.
