Mike James spent his childhood in Portland, Oregon, and played basketball while attending Grant High School.

He eventually started playing college basketball at Eastern Arizona College, a national junior college.

During his time in Arizona, he earned a spot on the all-conference and all-region teams.

In 2017, the player signed with the Phoenix Suns joined the team, and signed a two-way contract.
