The Kokomo, Indiana, community is mourning the unexpected loss of 29-year-old Makenna Mikesell, a beloved athletic trainer, teacher, and friend, remembered for her kindness and dedication.

Her bright smile and compassionate spirit touched countless lives, from the athletes she cared for to the friends and family who loved her deeply.

Makenna was a proud graduate of North Miami High School, class of 2014, where her passion for sports and helping others began to shine.

She went on to study athletic training at Manchester University, honing her skills and preparing for a career that would make a lasting impact.

Since 2018, Makenna has served as an athletic trainer at the Kokomo Area Career Center (KACC), where she has worked tirelessly to support student-athletes at Kokomo High School.

In 2026, she became a certified athletic trainer with Ascension Sports Medicine, further expanding her reach in the community.

Originally from Peru, Indiana, Makenna settled in Macy, Indiana, with her husband, Paul Mikesell, whom she married on July 1, 2026.

Together, they built a life filled with love and shared commitment to their community.

Makenna’s work at KACC and with Ascension Sports Medicine allowed her to forge deep connections with athletes, coaches, and colleagues, earning her a reputation as not just a skilled professional but a true friend.

Makenna’s Death Shocked Everyone At Kokomo High School And In The Community

Tributes poured in from those who knew her, each one highlighting her infectious positivity and genuine care for others.

The Kokomo High School Lady Kats Soccer team shared their grief, writing,

Dean Hockney, a colleague at Kokomo High School, expressed the huge influence of her loss:

Makenna’s friends shared personal stories that painted a picture of a lively, caring woman who made every moment brighter.

Sydney Latham, a close friend since their freshman year at Manchester University, wrote a moving tribute:

“I can’t believe I’m even typing these words .. I have been so thankful for your friendship from freshman year of college to this day. The memories that came pouring in today of all of our years together since 2014, after I got the news early this morning about your passing hit me like a ton of bricks. We had SO MUCH fun whenever we were together. Some of my favorite times, you were there. Ireland and England definitely top it, making matching build a bears with you will be forever one of my favorite things…I’m sad I won’t see your face at games anymore. Im devastated by the loss of you and your friendship.My heart breaks for Paul, your family and your community Makenna. You were a loving, caring, passionate soul.”

Caleb Rexroad, another dear friend, reflected on their shared history:

“We lost an amazing woman and dear friend this morning. Thank you for being a wonderful friend to me and everyone around you. I always loved seeing you post our senior prom photo together on my birthday and I’m going to miss you greatly. Enjoy heaven for us and I look forward to seeing you there again. Your husband and family will always be in our hearts.”

Makenna Was Always Present At Games, Practices, And Events, Ready With A Smile And A Helping Hand

Her work with Kokomo High School’s athletic programs, including baseball, soccer, and track, earned her the admiration of coaches and athletes alike.

Her dedication to her athletes was matched by her passion for teaching at the Kokomo Area Career Center, where she inspired students with her knowledge and enthusiasm.

Makenna’s ability to connect with people made her a beloved figure in both Peru and Macy, Indiana, where she lived and worked.

As the Kokomo community mourns, many are coming together to support Makenna’s husband, Paul, and her family.
