    Abdel Fattah El-Sisi is an Egyptian politician and retired military officer who became the 6th president of Egypt in 2014. He previously served as Egypt’s deputy prime minister from 2013 to 2014, as its minister of defense from 2012 to 2013, and as its director of military intelligence from 2010 to 2012. In January 2014, he got promoted to the rank of Field Marshal.

    Abdel Fattah El-Sisi attended the Egyptian Military Academy (the oldest and most prominent military academy in Egypt) and graduated in 1977. He joined the Egyptian Command and Staff College in 1987 and enrolled in its General Command and Staff Course. He then attended the Joint Services Command and Staff College (a British military academic) in 1992 and enrolled in its General Command and Staff Course. In 2003, he started studying at Nasser Military Academy in Egypt.

    Afterward, he attended the United States Army War College in Carlisle, Pennsylvania in 2006 and joined its War Course. Additionally, he has also done a Basic Infantry Course from the United States.

    1. He spent his childhood years growing up in Gamaleya, near al-Azhar Mosque.
    2. His parents hailed from Monufia Governorate.
    3. After graduating from the Egyptian Military Academy, Abdel Fattah El-Sisi held many command positions in the Egyptian Armed Forces and served as Egypt’s military attaché in Riyadh.
    4. During the Egyptian Revolution of 2011, he became the youngest member of the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces (SCAF) and served as the director of the military intelligence and reconnaissance department. As a member of the council, he made a controversial statement regarding allegations that Egyptian soldiers had subjected detained female demonstrators to forced virginity tests. He reportedly told Egypt’s state-owned newspaper that “the virginity-test procedure was done to protect the girls from r*pe as well as to protect the soldiers and officers from r*pe accusations.” With this, he became the first member of the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces to admit that the tests had been carried out.
    5. Throughout his military service, he was never a part of active combat.
    6. Abdel Fattah El-Sisi has been called an authoritarian leader.
    7. He has advocated for the reform and modernization of Islam and even called for an end to the Islamic verbal divorce, an idea that was rejected by a council of scholars from Al-Azhar University.
    8. After he became the president of Egypt in 2014, The Guardian described his public persona as one marked by “calmness and piety with a mixture of austerity and warmth”.
    9. He prefers to keep his private life away from the public eye.
