Arthur Smith studied at Georgetown Preparatory School (also known as Georgetown Prep), a Jesuit college-preparatory school for boys located in North Bethesda, Maryland. During his time there, he played on the offensive line and was team captain. In addition to that, he also spent some time as a defensive tackle. He also participated in track, lacrosse, and basketball.
After that, he attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, a public research university located in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. He played as a guard for the university’s football team from 2001 to 2005. He subsequently graduated from university in 2006.

- During his high school career, Smith was a first-team all-state selection at offensive line, two-time all-conference, and first-team All-Metro by The Washington Post.
- In 2001, he was a redshirt freshman.
- For the 2002 season, Arthur Smith played only in one game as he was diagnosed with a foot problem and was unable to play the remainder of the season.
- In January 2003, he underwent foot surgery and missed the entire 2003 season. Then, both in 2004 and 2005, he saw little action.
- He became a graduate assistant for North Carolina after graduating from university in 2006.
