    2. D’Angelo had been greatly inspired by musician , and in a 1995 interview, he discussed the influence of the musician on his approach to recording his debut album, stating, “I was one of those guys who read the album credits and I realized that Prince was a true artist. He wrote, produced, and performed, and that’s the way I wanted to do it.”
    3. The deaths of rappers  and  also had a major impact on him during the period.
    4. Some of his other musical influences included soul artist Al Green, funk artist George Clinton, and Afrobeat artist Fela Kuti.
    5. D’Angelo won the amateur talent competition at the Apollo Theater in Harlem 3 weeks in a row at the age of 18.
