Devin Allen is an American photographer, photojournalist, and activist who came into the spotlight in 2015 when his documentary photograph titled ‘Baltimore Uprising’ was selected as the cover photo for Time magazine’s May 2015 edition. He had captured the picture during the protests in Baltimore in April 2015 against the inhuman behavior of the local police department which had led to the death of a man named Freddie Gray, a 25-year-old African American. His neck and spine were severely injured while he was in a police vehicle and he went into a coma and eventually died. Another documentary photograph, clicked by him during the seminal George Floyd protests, was selected as the cover photo for Time magazine’s June 2026 edition. Several of his photographs and artwork have been held in the Smithsonian collection of the National Museum of African American History and Culture in Washington, D.C.

    Devin Allen Facts

    1. He used to live very close to the area where Freddie Gray’s encounter with the police had occurred in April 2015. He chose to document the protests against the police brutality in Freddie’s case via Instagram. Over a period of 3 weeks, he had clicked nearly 10k photographs which went viral and were subsequently used by media outlets like the BBC, The Washington Post, and The New York Times.
    2. When his photograph titled ‘Baltimore Uprising’ was selected as the cover photo for Time magazine’s May 2015 edition, he had become just the 3rd amateur photographer to be featured on the cover of Time magazine. The picture depicts a man running away from a pack of charging police officers.
    3. In 2015, he had launched a youth program called Through Their Eyes to teach photography to school students in Baltimore, particularly students from districts with underfunded arts education programs. The program included donating cameras to students and organizing educational workshops and art exhibitions.
    4. In 2016, his photography exhibit titled ‘A Beautiful Ghetto’ was held at the Gallery Slought. A year later, he had published his first photography book with the same title and it was nominated for the 49th NAACP (National Association for the Advancement of Colored People) Image Awards in the category of ‘Outstanding Literary Work – Debut Author’.
    5. The same year, he was selected as the inaugural recipient of the Gordon Parks Foundation Fellowship. The Fellowship had helped him support the continuation of his Through Their Eyes philanthropy project.
