Guidance Counselor and girls’ basketball coach at Hillsborough Board of Education, Ian M. Progin, sadly passed away on Friday.

Ian’s official profile shows that he attended Hillsborough High School and later played basketball at Rutgers University.

At Rutgers University, he played as a forward and appeared in three games, contributing an average of 1.0 points per game.

Later, in September 2004, he returned to Hillsborough High School and became the guidance counselor and basketball coach.

In 2011, Ian was diagnosed with grade IV glioblastoma. Fundraisers raised funds for his family, like a 2012 comedy night and a 2011 Steeplechase race with 760 participants.

Basketball Coach Ian M. Progin Passed Away At The Age Of 47

A guidance counselor and coach, Ian M. Progin, born on April 9, 1978, took his last breath on Friday, May 2, 2026, at 47. However, the exact cause of death has not been revealed.

Newxtpoint News took to their official Facebook handle to mourn the loss of Ian. They wrote,

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Ian Progin of Hillsborough, New Jersey. Ian was a cherished presence in the lives of many, known for their friendly demeanor and the ability to bring comfort and light to those around them.

Close ones and relatives have poured their heartfelt condolences and sent prayers to Ian’s family to stay strong in this challenging time.

A memorial gathering will honor Ian Progin’s life on Tuesday, May 6, 2026, from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at Mary Mother of God Church, 157 S. Triangle Road, Hillsborough, New Jersey.

A memorial Mass will follow this at 11:30 a.m. at Mary Mother of God Church.

Ian M. Progin Is Survived By His Wife, Courtney, And Two Children

Ian M. Progin was married to Courtney Sinclair Progin in October 2004. On October 30, 2026, Courtney wished Ian a happy 20th marriage anniversary through her official Facebook handle.

20 years may not be a lifetime but it was the start of our lifetime together. We supported each other every step of the way. I got to watch you live your passion and get up every day ready to make a difference. We built a house, raised our babies and enjoyed very beautiful moments in the midst of the toughest times. I am proud of us! Happy 20th Anniversary Ian Progin!

They were blessed with their first child, Payton, 20, in 2006. In 2009, they welcomed their second child, Jeffery, 17.

On April 9, 2026, Courtney wished Ian a happy 47th birthday through her Facebook handle. She captioned,

Happy 47th Birthday Ian Progin! We love you to the moon and back

Sadly, their married life ended following the tragic death of Ian.

Courtney was born to her father, Randy, and her mother, Diane Sinclair. She shared a close bond with her grandfather, Harry J Chowansky Jr.

Harry served as a Sergeant in the US Army stationed in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, from September 1944 to August 1946.

Sadly, Harry passed away on Friday, June 1, 2018, at Foothill Acres Nursing Home in Hillsborough, NJ, at 91.
