- In 1962, he became the first ever actor to receive an Oscar nomination for performance in a non-English language film for his work in Divorce Italian Style (1961). He went on to receive 2 more ‘Best Actor’ nominations for A Special Day (1977) and Dark Eyes (1987), but he never won the coveted award.
- Rome’s iconic Trevi Fountain, where Marcello filmed a memorable scene in La Dolce Vita (1960), was turned off and covered in black as a tribute to the actor after his death.
- In 1994, he was honored with a Knight Grand Cross of the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic for his contributions to Italian culture and art.
- The Venice Film Festival introduced the ‘Marcello Mastroianni Award’ in 1998. Each year, the award is given to the best debut performance by an emerging actor or actress.
