    1. His father coined the nickname “Mooney” after the original Scarface (1932) actor Paul Muni (which itself was the actor’s stage name).
    2. Paul Mooney made his first theatrical film appearance in the comedy film, Which Way Is Up?, in 1977.
    3. He portrayed the character of singer, songwriter, and entrepreneur Sam Cooke in the 1978 biographical film, The Buddy Holly Story, which is based on the life story of rock musician Buddy Holly.
    4. His memoir titled Black Is the New White was released in 2007.
    5. His brother announced in November 2014 that Mooney had prostate cancer. Nevertheless, he continued to tour and perform his stand-up comedy act.
    6. It was alleged by Richard Pryor’s ex-bodyguard, Rashon Khan, in an August 2019 interview with Comedy Hype that Mooney had molested Pryor’s son, Richard Pryor Jr., when Pryor Jr. was a child. Rashon Khan also added that Pryor had a desire to have Mooney killed in a murder-for-hire plot over this incident.
