- She was raised in Prince George, British Columbia where she relocated with her family at the age of four.
- Sonya relocated to Victoria to train as a singer and to learn to play the guitar. It was during her time there, that she developed an interest in acting.
- She made her debut TV show appearance as a Reporter in 2gether: The Series in 2000. Later, in 2003, Salomaa was cast as Cynthia in House of the Dead.
