- He was raised in Yonkers, New York.
- He made his first theatrical film appearance by playing the role of Guest at Party in the 2005 sports-drama film, Two for the Money, which starred the likes of , , and . However, Tyler’s role went uncredited.
- His portrayal of comedian and actor in the television period sitcom, Everybody Hates Chris, earned him much critical acclaim. He got nominated for the NAACP Image Award in the “Outstanding Actor in a Comedy Series” category consecutively from 2006 to 2010 and won the same in 2007. He was also nominated for Teen Choice Award and Young Artist Award.
- In 2014, Tyler James Williams played the role of Lionel Higgins in the comedy-drama film, Dear White People. For this role, he won the Black Reel Award for “Best Breakthrough Performance”.
- His portrayal of Leon in the 2017 period crime drama film, Detroit, won him the NAACP Image Award in the “Outstanding Independent Motion Picture” category in 2018.
